Helideck surface Friction Surveys are a safety-critical aspect of helicopter operations onshore and offshore.
The landing area should present a non-slip surface for helicopter operations. It is the responsibility of the asset manager to ensure compliance adheres. A helideck surface friction test offers due diligence minimizing the risk of incompliance.
We have the expertise and equipment, let HIM verify your helideck is compliant with national regulatory standards allowing you to focus on your vision.
WHY HELIDECK FRICTION TESTING
Civil Aviation Authorities stipulate the minimum average surface friction value that should be achieved, the limiting value is related to the threshold at which a helicopter would be expected to slide on a helideck.
A Helideck Landing Net may be used to mitigate insufficient surface friction if the minimum Grip Number value of 0.5GN is achieved. However, a friction survey is still necessary when a net is installed to determine the surface friction value of the areas the net does not cover. Modern Helidecks are more frequently designed with a Deck Integrated Fire-Fighting Systems (DIFFS), however nets are deemed incompatible with this system as the net may have a detrimental impact on the DIFFS operational performance in an event of an emergency.
A surface Friction Survey in compliance with CAP 437 8th Edition offers risk management and the option not to have a Helideck Landing Net at all which lowers the risks of slips, trips and falls on busy operational helidecks.
The Civil Aviation Authorities issue guidance on criteria and test method, Helideck Integrity Management has the equipment and methodology that meet the stringent requirements of UK CCA CAP 437 8th Edition.
FINDLAY IRVINE HELIDECK MICRO GRIPTESTER EQUIPMENT
Helideck Integrity Management uses the Helideck micro GripTester which is the World’s first purpose-built continuous friction measuring device designed specifically for testing Helidecks and Helicopter Landing Zones. It has been specifically designed to cope with the harsh offshore environments and for transportation to difficult to reach installations. Initially designed for use in the North Sea Oil and Gas fields, it has now been adopted as the industry standard across the World.
Helideck micro GripTester’s lightweight, robust construction and reliable performance make it the most deployable push friction tester in the World. With the ease of use and design philosophy, the Helideck micro GripTester Friction can be transported simply and efficiently globally with the two cases only weighing 12kg each, ideal for transporting to offshore oil installations via helicopter.
